President of Russia Vladimir Putin took part in a meeting of the Defense Ministry board, where he delivered a wide-ranging address focused on the military operation in Ukraine, the state of Russia's armed forces, and the broader geopolitical environment.
The Russian leader described the current international situation as tense but rejected claims by Western politicians that Europe faces an inevitable large-scale war with Russia.
"In Europe, people are being fed fears about an unavoidable clash with Russia, about the need to prepare for a big war. This is a lie and pure nonsense,”
According to Vladimir Putin, some Western figures who once held or still hold senior positions appear to have forgotten their responsibility, spreading alarmist rhetoric disconnected from reality.
He stressed that Moscow continues to prefer a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. However, if Ukraine and its Western backers refuse what he called a substantive dialogue, Russia will pursue its objectives by military means, including what he described as the liberation of its historical territories.
Putin stated that in 2025 alone, Russian forces established control over more than 300 populated areas. He added that the task of creating and expanding a buffer zone along the front line would be addressed consistently in the future.
Calling the current year a decisive phase in achieving the goals of the military campaign, the president said the Russian army has secured and firmly maintains strategic initiative across the entire front line.
"Our troops are advancing with confidence and grinding down the enemy, its groupings and reserves, including so-called elite units trained in Western military centers and equipped with modern foreign weapons,”
He argued that these developments demonstrate the effectiveness of Russia's military planning and operational execution.
Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russian forces continue to receive a steady supply of missile systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and robotic equipment.
According to him, medium-range ballistic missiles known as "Oreshnik” are scheduled to be placed on combat duty before the end of the year.
The president also highlighted successful tests of advanced strategic systems.
"Successful trials have been conducted for the Burevestnik strategic cruise missile with unlimited range and the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle. Thanks to nuclear propulsion, these systems will remain unique for a long time and ensure strategic parity, security, and Russia's global position for decades.”
He added that work on these weapons would continue, with further refinement and improvement already underway.
Reflecting on the period following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Putin said Russia once believed it would quickly become part of what was described as the civilized Western world.
"After the breakup of the Soviet Union, we thought we would soon join the so-called civilized Western family. Today it turns out there is no civilization there at all, only widespread degradation.”
He claimed that many in Europe assumed Russia would rapidly fall apart and were eager to benefit from such a collapse.
According to the president, these miscalculations shaped Moscow's current understanding of its security environment and reinforced the need to rely on its own military, economic, and technological capabilities.
The US and "European piglets" were confident they could quickly destroy Russia and profit from it, Putin added.
"The European piglets immediately joined the Biden administration in the hopes of profiting from the collapse of our country, to reclaim what had been lost in previous historical periods, to gain revenge," Putin said.
