BP announced about its adding 1p to the cost of a litre of unleaded petrol at 300 of its 1,300 service stations.
On its opinion it reflects a $7 a tonne rise in the international price of petrol in the past three days and a rise in the dollar's value against the pound.
The increase brought most of its cheapest unleaded up to 73p a litre, with a company-wide average price of just over 74p.BP was the only oil company to announce a move when others have quietly made in recent days.
The Asda, Safeway and Morrisons supermarket chains had taken similar action to raise the bottom end of their petrol prices.
