Nigerian Women vs Oil Majors

Women from several local tribes threatened to once again seize the oil installations as well as operational headquarters of Shell and ChevronTexaco in Nigeria on Thursday. The aggrieved women said the only way to prevent the invasion was for President Olusegun Obasanjo to go to Warri and address them before Thursday morning.

The women also claimed that their findings had revealed that their alleged 15 missing colleagues perished in the river behind Chevron office in Warri in a desperate bid to escape security reprisal.

The women said the planned invasion on Thursday was sequel to the expiration of the 48-hour ultimatum given earlier to Shell and ChevronTexaco to meet their demands. The women had, last Thursday, invaded the companies of the two oil majors demanding improved living conditions. They had a brutal encounter with security agents during which they claimed about 800 of them sustained serious injuries and 15 others went missing. They issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the oil companies, last weekend, to fish out the missing persons, pay the bills of the injured and pay compensation over their inhuman treatment by the security agents. A spokesperson for the women that "there is no going back on our plan to invade the oil facilities and offices of Shell and ChevronTexaco on Thursday, let the security agents roll out their armored tanks and be prepared to kill all of us on Thursday." She said the only way to avert the crisis of Thursday "is for President Olusegun Obasanjo to come down here to listen to our side of the story and address us before Thursday morning.
