The competition in creation the monument was declared by Committee on Economical Development, Industrial Policy and Trade, Committee on Town-planning, and St Petersburg Architect Union.
The Monument is planned to be established in Alley of Heroes, in Serafim Cemetery, where 32 members of the Kursk crew are buried. One of these days, an awful act of vandalism was committed in the alley: 43 graves were defiled. Some of the monuments cannot be restored. Therefore, the alley should be reconstructed.
The priest of the temple of Serafim Cemetery, Vasily Ermakov personally knew some of the Kursk sailors, one of them he even counselled before the campaign.
The temple of Serafim Cemetery is the place where thousands of St Petersburg citizens gather, asking father Vasily’s for advise and blessing. He is one of the most beloved and known priests in the city. So, many St Petersburg citizens will see the future monument.
The main condition of the competition is lack of figure composition on the monument. The works of the competition participants should be presented in graphic form, on 2-square-metre plane-table. If there is a model of the monument, a photograph of it should be presented to the commission. The competing works will be accepted till November 4 and considered within 10 days, so November 14, the jury will announce its decision.
According to Z.Ivkina, main secretary of the jury, the winners of the competition who occupy first three places will receive prizes.
