Geothermal power plant goes on line in Kamchatka

On Monday the first stage of a geothermal power plant was put into service on the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far Eastern region. It will generate electricity through the use of hot springs which are in abundance in the peninsula.

For the time being, the facility is idling for checking the technical condition and workability of its systems. On August 14-15 it will be put under load.

The total rated capacity of the power plant is 200 megawatts. It will feed electricity to the industrial zone of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, the regions' administrative center. The putting on stream of the geothermal power plant will improve electricity service in the peninsula. Before, Kamchatka had to bring in fuel from outside.
