Russian fishing schooner sank in the Tatar Strait

The Russian Emergencies Ministry reported that on Monday afternoon in the Tatar Strait (the sea of Okhotsk), 180 km from the city of Holmsk, a Russian fishing schooner "Ivan Kasatkin" sank.

According to the preliminary information, the dry-cargo ship "Komsomolets Primorsky" which arrived at the site of the accident discovered 6 crew members out of 17 who managed to get onto a life raft.

Other 11 sailors also managed to get onto another raft. But the dry-cargo ship failed to discover that life raft.

According to the representative of the Emergencies Ministry, the search and rescue operations are complicated by adverse weather conditions: waves at sea reach the height of three meters, strong wind is blowing (up to 20 meters per second).

The situation is being aggravated by the fact that the dry-cargo ship's boards "are very high, up to 6 meters" and under such rough sea conditions it is not possible to raise the sailors in distress on board the ship.

According to the information from the Emergencies Ministry, the dry-cargo ship crew members are constantly monitoring people on the raft. They are looking for opportunities to save the sailors in distress
