Annual report of global diversified miner BHP Billiton was released last week, it performs the company’s health, safety, environmental and community.
In this report outlines its principles and goals of zero harm to people and environment.
They have also set five-year targets across the areas of health, safety, environment and community, with the aim of driving continual improvement.
The company has made good progress against many of its targets, but added that these achievements provide little satisfaction as long as there are fatal accidents during the company’s operations.
The past year also marked the end of BHP Billiton’s involvement with the Ok Tedi copper mine in Papua New Guinea, through the transfer of the company’s shareholding to PNG Sustainable Development Programme.
The company’s commitment to sustainable development is also expressed through its active involvement in external initiatives.
The DJSI enables investors to select leading companies on the basis of economic, social and environmental indicators, without significantly deviating from the market in terms of sector allocation.
BHP has also formally committed to the UN Global Compact and its associated principles, which address globalisation issues under the three key areas of human rights, labour standards and the environment. ©
