The situation in the Ivory Coast is far from calm, with the rebel forces holding the country’s second city, Bouake and the main northern city of Korhogo.
270 people have died in fighting which began with last Thursday’s attempted coup, attributed by the government forces to General Robert Guei, who has been killed. However, the rebels say that General Guei had nothing to do with the movement.
Meanwhile the French military presence in the country has been increased from 600 to 800 troops. The French Defence Minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, has called for the sides to dialogue.
