Pankisi Clear of Terrorists, Claims Shevardnadze

The Pankissi Valley is “totally free of foreign armed formations”, declared Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze on Monday morning in an interview with Georgian National Radio.

Shevardnadze made his declarations after weeks of pressure applied by Moscow due to the action of Chechen terrorists being harboured inside Georgia, which they used as a base and allegations that the Georgian authorities were turning a blind eye to their presence.

Shevardnadze declared that “The problem of Pankissi does not exist any more” and added that “The police and interior ministry troops control the situation in Pankissi and will not allow the return of illegal armed groups in the region for any motive”.

Actions speak louder than words.
