The Procession of Candles on the night October 12th at Fatima, central Portugal, where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in 1917, telling them three secrets, gathered together a crowd of over one million, according to sources in the Catholic Church.
Dom Serafim Ferreira e Silva, the bishop of Leiria, declared that the enormous crowd was due to the fact that “at times when the economy is not going well, people think more about their inner life”, also that people feel unsafe after 11th September and that this pilgrimage day fell on a Sunday.
Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in a hawthorn tree in the village of Fбtima in 1917 on 13th May, then every month until October on 13th of each month, during which time she revealed three secrets. Despite being interrogated in a climate of general disbelief, the children stood by their stories that Our Lady had appeared and that the three secrets had been revealed. One was the end of the First World War, the second was the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989 and the third alluded to “a man dressed in white” in a crowd, injured, which is taken as a reference to the attack against the Pope in the 1980s.
Sister Lucia, one of the shepherd children, who became a nun, is still alive.
