Press Ministry Calls For Secrecy

The Russian Press Ministry stated that the Russian mass media should observe the legislation on the struggle with terrorism and extremism while reporting about the hostage situation in the Moscow theatre. This was mentioned in the ministry’s statement sent to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

The Russian Press Ministry states that the leadership of all Russian media should see to it that no information about the special techniques and tactics used for realization of the special anti-terrorism operation be leaked; this is to be done to prevent possible problems in the realization of the operation. There is also a strong apprehension that this may cause danger to the lives and health of people who stay in or outside the zone where the operation is being conducted. No information should be spread to propagandize or justify terrorism and extremism.

In addition, the statement also appeals to the mass media to avoid the publication of materials that may incite national or religious discord, disgrace to national dignity, or any other kind of extremist materials.

Russian communist leader Gennady Zyuganov added a few more requests to the statement made by the Ministry for Press; he called upon the mass media not “to go into hysteria” about the situation. Gennady Zyuganov said: “Remember that we are living in a multi-national state, which is why we should consider any word we publish in the media.” The communist leader warned that any alarmist material will only aggravate the hostage situation; he stressed that it’s more important now to save the lives of the people, RIA Novosti informs.
