Bomb disposal experts collected more than 26,600 shells from around the 275th ammunition base in the Melitopol district of the Zaporozhye region in Ukraine, a spokesman for the press service of the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry reported. The base burned on May 6.
According to the ministry's data, the disposal experts are presently clearing a 25 kilometer radius zone, especially in places where locals found explosives.
Two thousand residential homes, 15 schools, five hospitals and four houses of culture have already been repaired.
During the fire, shells from the depot scattered in a radius of 10-40 kilometers; many houses were damaged. The prosecutor's office accuses six servicemen, including the commander of the unit, of the involvement in the fire. They were smoking on the ground of the artillery shell depot.
As a result of the fire, one man died of a wound from a shell fragment and five died of heart attacks.
