An attempt was made in Daghestan, a republic of Russia bordering on Chechnya, to assassinate the administration chief in one of the republic's regions.
A car with the chief of the Kizilyurt region of Daghestan, Abdurakhman Gadzhiyev, was fired at from an automatic gun, the Interior Ministry of Daghestan reported in the morning.
Gadzhiyev was seriously wounded and taken to the reanimation department of a hospital in Kizilyurt, a city not far from the Daghestani capital, Makhachkala.
According to the latest information, Gadzhiyev has been operated on, but the doctors are still worried about his life. He was shot in the head and the brain was injured. His two bodyguards were wounded as well. Their life is not jeopardized.
The Lada car, from which the administration chief was fired at, was found by the police not far from the place where the assassination attempt had been made. It had been burned down.
Criminal proceedings have been instituted.
