Thursday morning, water supply stopped in the capital of Jewish Autonomous Region - Birobidzhan (the Russian Far East).
As RIA Novosti was told by chief engineer of the municipal unitary enterprise Gorvodokanal Viktor Snetkov, it was caused by a break in the trunk water pipe in the western part of the city.
According to him, this is the first accident of such a great scale in the centralised water supply system since the time of its appearance in the city. The trunk water pipe, which supplies water to the whole city, was built in 1972 and has practically exhausted its resource by the present time.
Under the norm, 24 hours are needed to cope with such accidents. However, the specialists from the Gorvodokanal hope to finish the necessary work by Thursday evening.
Water is being brought to schools, kindergartens and hospitals. However, hospitals were recommended to put off ordinary operations and other work connected with the use of the great amount of water.
