In a statement distributed in Tehran on Wednesday, the Iranian foreign ministry urged the world community to press Tel Aviv to discontinue military action against Palestine and thereby keep the region from collapsing into a new military and political crisis. According to the statement, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi has written to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that "Israel must be punished for launching an aggression against Lebanon." From now on, Iran is going to support Lebanon and Syria's position as far as Mideastern settlement in concerned, stressed the document. In a recent telephone conversation with his Lebanese counterpart Mahmud Hammud, Kharrazi condemned the bombing of the Syrian radar station in Lebanon, and classified Israel's actions as an attempt to disrupt stability in Lebanese society and as deliberate provocation intended to destabilize the situation in the Mideast, points out the Iranian foreign ministry.
