A bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a river in northern India, killing as many as 50 people, police said Friday. The accident occurred Thursday afternoon near Lahal, a village near Chamba town, 280 miles north of New Delhi. The bus was overcrowded with passengers and many people were perched on the rooftop, a deputy superintendent of police is quoted by The Associated Press as saying. Police and volunteers pulled out several passengers from the bus, but were unable to drag the bus out of the water. Chaudhary said some people may have survived by swimming ashore.
