Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze has spoken in favour of Turkey's participation in a peace-keeping operation in Abkhazia when conferring with his Turkish counterpart Ahmed Necdet Sezer, now on an official visit in Georgia. "If the UN Security Council agrees to the deployment of an international force in the Abkhaz conflict-stricken zone, we shall ask the Turkish president to consider his country's participation as peace-keeper," Zhevardnadze said at a briefing when the meeting was over. Tbilisi welcomes Turkey's role and increasing participation in Abkhaz settlement and deems it important to use its potential in the process, said Shevardnadze. For his part, Ahmed Necdet Sezer made a point of Ankara championing a peaceful settlement of the Abkhazia problem with account of Georgia's territorial integrity and expressed Turkey's readiness to assume part of responsibility for a settlement.
