A Tejas fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed during a performance at the Dubai Airshow, an accident witnessed by hundreds of spectators and captured on video.
The aircraft went down while performing one of the programmed demonstration elements. According to correspondents from Associated Press,
“The Tejas combat aircraft used by the Indian Air Force crashed at around 14:10 (13:10 Moscow time) during a demonstration flight before spectators.”
At the time the footage surfaced online, there was no information about casualties. The video captured only the moment the jet struck the ground and the explosion that followed.
The Indian Air Force later confirmed that the pilot of the crashed fighter did not survive. He was unable to eject in time.
“The pilot sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash,”
the Air Force stated, adding that a special commission will be established to determine the cause of the accident.
The Dubai Airshow is traditionally held in the United Arab Emirates. The latest international aviation exhibition was the nineteenth edition and ran until November 21. It is organized every two years in Dubai.
