The Azerbaijani Embassy was damaged during an overnight attack by Russian forces on Kyiv. As noted by the Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua, the embassy is located near the Artem missile plant, which is regularly targeted by missile strikes.
According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, part of the embassy’s perimeter fence was destroyed, and several buildings, service vehicles, the administrative building, and the consular section sustained damage. No one was injured. The impact occurred at around 1 a.m. Kyiv time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the diplomatic facility had been damaged by falling debris from an Iskander missile.
On 14 November, Zelensky called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Aliyev condemned the missile strike on the embassy building and underscored that, “in accordance with the norms and principles of international law, such attacks on diplomatic missions are unacceptable.”
“I am grateful for the support and sympathy extended to our people. (...) President Aliyev condemned this strike and emphasized that it is not the first time Russians have targeted both the embassy building and other facilities linked to Azerbaijan.”
This is how Zelensky described the conversation.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry subsequently summoned Russian Ambassador Mikhail Yevdokimov.
“A firm protest was expressed in connection with the fall of an Iskander-type missile on the territory of the embassy, and a corresponding note was handed to him,” the ministry reported.
The ministry also recalled that strikes had previously occurred near the embassy, and that in August, a fuel depot belonging to the Azerbaijani company SOCAR in the Odesa region was attacked twice.
“It was emphasized that all these incidents raise questions regarding the intent behind the missile strikes. (...) Russia was urged to conduct an appropriate investigation into the matter and provide detailed explanations.”
This statement concluded the ministry’s response.
