Why Your Teeth Hurt and How to Protect Them

Sensitive Teeth: Causes, Prevention, and Expert Advice

Increased tooth sensitivity may be linked to enamel damage, gum inflammation, or metabolic disturbances. General practitioner Maria Belyaeva discussed this with Pravda.Ru.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

According to Dr. Belyaeva, teeth can become sensitive for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is due to natural changes in the body, while other times it results from external factors. Enamel health is influenced by both metabolic processes and lifestyle choices.

"Heightened sensitivity can develop due to environmental factors, metabolic changes, or the consumption of acidic foods. In these cases, enamel becomes more permeable and loses part of its protective function. As a result, teeth react to cold, hot, or acidic stimuli. For some people, discomfort resolves on its own, while for others it becomes a persistent problem," explained Belyaeva.

The Role of Oral Care

The doctor emphasized that improper oral hygiene often leads to increased sensitivity. Brushing too hard or using a stiff toothbrush can damage the gums, causing inflammation and reducing their attachment to the teeth. This exposes areas not meant to contact the external environment, resulting in pain even from minor triggers like air or water.

"If gums are inflamed and do not adhere properly to the teeth, a vulnerable section is exposed. It is crucial not to delay a visit to the dentist and to identify the cause of sensitivity. Sometimes adjusting brushing technique or undergoing a course of strengthening procedures is sufficient. In other cases, sensitivity may indicate early stages of dental conditions that should not be ignored," Belyaeva noted.

When to See a Dentist

Belyaeva stressed that if discomfort persists for more than a week or worsens, it is essential to consult a dentist. Only a professional can determine the exact cause and prescribe appropriate treatment. Ignoring the problem may lead to gum inflammation, cavities, or even temporomandibular joint disorders. Timely consultation helps alleviate pain and prevents serious complications.
