One of the world's largest oil companies - Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Friday it will begin construction on the expansion of its joint-venture refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
"Shell's investment in the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery expansion will lead to increased supplies of gasoline, diesel and aviation fuels in the U.S.," the company said in a statement.
Shell expects the expansion to boost capacity by 325,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day to 600,000 barrels, making it the largest refinery in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world.
The Port Arthur operation is run in cooperation with Saudi Refining Inc.
Shell shares were little changed at 2097 pence (US$42.05; EUR30) in London.
