Former Russian prime Minister, currently – Envoy of Russian President in Privolzhsky Federal District Sergey Kirienko had tried to obtain the US citizenship, the five US Congressmen wrote in their letter to the Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The Congressmen asked the US Department of State to investigate if the former Russian Prime Minister was involved in the disappearing of $4.8 billion loan of the International Monetary Fund given to Russia in 1998.
According to the Senators Mike Pence, Henry Bonila, Charles Norvud, Phil Crane and Dan Barton Congressmen, Mr. Kirienko purchased some real estate in Chicago and for this reason is eligible for obtaining green card. Foreigners investing $1,000,000 in the US economy can apply for the US citizenship.
Mr. Kirienko is going to sue Novaya Gazeta (New Paper) which published the letter of the US Congressmen. The former Prime Minister said in an Echo of Moscow interview that the accusations of him are "impertinent lies”.
"I am suing Novaya Gazeta and the reporters who wrote this", said Mr. Kirienko. “They must publicly apologize to me”. The letter of the Congressmen “contains no accusations, just questions, people have the right to ask questions, and I can admit that they were misled by somebody. The will receive replies to their questions, and then will have to apologize to me for spreading lies”.
In turn, Chief Editor of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov said that the newspaper would participate in the legal hearings as they would bring light on the destiny of $4.8 billion.
