Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement that the information of some media about the US ban on foreigners’ leaving Iraq is not correct.
According to the statement, the borders of Iraq are still open for entering and leaving the country. The traffic is closed down only on Amman-Baghdad highway between towns Ramadi and Al-Fallujah.
There are no plans to evacuate Russians from Iraq, stated the Foreign Ministry, but recommended Russian citizens to refrain from entering Iraq.
NEWSru reported that Baghdad-Amman highway had been the only route used by foreign citizens for leaving Iraq for Jordan (which has regular passenger flights). Baghdad airport has flights only of US military aircrafts, there is no passenger aviation there today.
All the other roads adjusting Baghdad-Amman highway, are controlled by Mahdi Army militants.
The officials of foreign embassies negotiated with the occupying authorities other options for evacuating foreigners from Iraq. And they found this option. NEWSru.com reported that some foreign employees in Iraq (including Russians) flew from Baghdad to Jordan from the military aerodrome of the coalition forces.
