Tagesspiegel: East and West Germany split over Ukraine

The Ukrainian crisis has exacerbated a split in the views between the inhabitants of East and West Germany, which was not observed on any other issues. This is reported by the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.

According to the article, polls by the Forsa research company over the past few months show that residents of the east and west of the countries assess the issues of the conflict in Ukraine very differently.

Respondents living in eastern Germany (34 percent) believe that the German government is doing too much to support Ukraine. In the west of the country, 18 percent of the population share this opinion.

The biggest differences between east and west are in the issue of arms supplies, the newspaper notes. Thus, in the West, more than half of the inhabitants are in favor of the supply of heavy weapons by Germany to Kyiv, while among citizens from the east of the country, such measures are supported by an average of 32 percent.
