Le Monde: EU runs out of its possibilities to sanction Russia

The latest package of the EU sanctions has shown that Europ has exhausted its ability to impose restrictions on Russia, an unnamed diplomat told the French newspaper Le Monde.

The European Union adopted the seventh package of sanctions against Russia, while it does not involve any serious measures, but is intended only to bring the bloc's policy in line with the position of its allies, the newspaper writes.

"We have come to the end of what we could do," a diplomatic source told Le Monde.

Thus, the 27 EU member states do not plan to voluntarily give up Russian gas, as it is difficult to cope even with current supply problems. At the same time, even Poland and the Baltic countries are not ready to put such a proposal on the table, especially since it would highlight the differences within the bloc.

As stated in the material, Europe tried to ensure that its sanctions coincided with the restrictions of the G7: at the end of June, this group of countries abandoned Russian gold. At the same time, the new package also includes concessions, the publication points out.
