Former heads of NATO doubted combatant value of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, ex-Secretary General of NATO and British General Richard Shirreff, who served as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, assert that combat equipment of many members of the block, including the key ones, suffer from "chronic underfunding" and "critical deficiencies". Scheffer and Shirreff pointed out in the report that out of 31 Tiger helicopters in the arsenal of the German Bundeswehr only 10 are usable, while out of 406 Marder armoured infantry vehicles only 280 vehicles function properly.
The British military expert Shirreff also criticizes capabilities of the United Kingdom's combat divisions. He noted that their deployment "would be a major challenge".
Pravda.Ru reported that military analysts of the American Rand Corp. released a report where they estimated the NATO's chances to oppose Russia in case of our invasion into the Baltic States.
As they concluded, Russia may reach Estonia and repulse NATO in 36 hours.
