CNN stops broadcasting its programs in Russia

The broadcast of US-based network CNN in cable and satellite networks of Russia will be terminated on the last day of the outgoing year, Turner Broadcasting System International, the owner of CNN, and its Russian representative office said. Reportedly, the US-based television channel does not have a Russian broadcasting license, RIA Novosti reports.

In connection with the Russian law, which was passed in October 2014, foreign shareholders are not allowed to hold a share of more than 20 percent in the capital of Russian media outlets. According to Russian officials, CNN can easily obtain a license to broadcast in the Russian Federation in compliance with applicable procedures."

Turner International considers possible distribution of CNN in Russia in light of recent changes in the Russian legislation on the media. However, it remains unknown whether CNN will reappear in Russian networks.

Representatives for the CNN office in Moscow said that the office would continue working as usual.

CNN was broadcast in Russia via paid cable and satellite networks. CNN is a television channel that was founded by Ted Turner on June 1, 1980. It is a division of Turner Broadcasting System, owned by Time Warner.
