Chinese-Kyrgyz-Uzbek railway project underway

A project envisaging a Chinese-Kyrgyz-Uzbek railway connecting Southeast Asia with Europe, the Mideast and Persian Gulf countries will be worked out by the end of the year, reported Erkinbek Masadykov, General Director of Arterial Railways Construction Department of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Transport and Communications.

According to his words, the preliminary cost of the project is 1.2-1.5 billion US dollars. The money is coming from donors.

Masadykov said the railway would enable Kyrgyzstan to earn from 200 to 250 million dollars per year from transit of goods across the republic's territory alone.

Moreover, construction of the railway will provide jobs for thousands of people. The republic is also expecting to draw profit from roadside trade.

A 250 to 260 kilometer long section of the road crossing the city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan, will round off a transcontinental arterial railway, which is already known as the new Great Silk Way.
