German Interior Minister, U.S. officials discuss Afghan police training

German Interior Miniater met with Bush administration officials and said that Germany was looking to improve coordination with the United States on police training in Afghanistan.

Germany recently transferred its small training mission in Afghanistan to European Union authority.

The EU launched the mission in June to supplement 500 American experts in the country training the Afghan police. EU officials acknowledged at the time that the size of the mission fell well short of expectations, and since then the 27-nation union has struggled to find personnel for the operation.

Schaeuble also met Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Monday to discuss improving data exchange to prevent terrorist operatives from traveling undetected over borders.

He planned to meet with U.S. lawmakers and the National Security Agency's director, Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander on Tuesday.
