Swine Flu Deaths Decrease in South Africa

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the number of swine flu cases is decreasing in South Africa as the summer months approach.

Ninety one people have died from the H1N1 virus since June this year.

To date over 12 000 confirmed cases have been reported.

The NICD's Nombuso Shabalala said pregnant women were most at risk of contracting the virus.

"There are 25 pregnant women who have died out of the 91 deaths and most of them were in their third trimester," said Shabalala, Primedia Broadcasting reports.

It was also reported, ninety-one people have died from swine flu in South Africa, but the number of cases is falling as the country moves into the warmer summer months.

The deaths were between the age groups of three and 70, with 59% female.

The Western Cape had the highest number of deaths at 39, followed by KwaZulu-Natal 21, and the Eastern Cape 10, The Witness reports.

News agencies also report, the country's economic hub, Gauteng province, has been the worst affected, followed by the Western Cape.

South Africa 's first swine flu case was detected on June 18, Harare Tribune reports.
