Minor earthquake rattles Indian capital

A slight earthquake shook New Delhi early in the morning on Monday, waking people up. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

A statement by the Indian Meteorological Department, which monitors earthquakes, said the 4.3-magnitude quake was only felt in New Delhi and the surrounding areas. It struck about 4:43 a.m.

The department said thousands of people panicked and left their homes when the earthquake struck.

R. Verma, a technician, ran with his family into an open space at an apartment complex in eastern New Delhi.

"I was terrified," he told The Associated Press.

In October 2006, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is claimed by both India and Pakistan. That quake killed some 80,000 people. Most of the deaths were in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
