Tropical storm Fengshen ravages Hong Kong

Tropical storm Fengshen brought more heavy rain and strong winds to Hong Kong on Wednesday, shutting down the city's financial markets, schools and courts.

Fengshen, which battered the Philippines over the weekend, hit Hong Kong late Tuesday and had moved about 68 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of the city as of Wednesday evening, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

The storm was weakening as it headed over mainland China, it said.

The Hong Kong government closed all schools, courts and financial markets in the morning after a weather alert was issued late Tuesday.

The storm injured at least 17 people and flooded 38 areas across Hong Kong, the government said in a statement.

Fengshen's strength weakened from a typhoon to a tropical storm Tuesday.

In the Philippines, it left 329 people dead from flooding and landslides and more than 200 missing. More than 800 others were missing on a ferry that capsized in the rough weather.
