2 Taiwanese tourists killed in bus crash in Western Canada

Two Taiwanese women killed and two others wounded in a tour bus crash in the British Columbia mountains.

The bus, which was carrying 11 passengers - all from Taiwan - crashed Thursday night while en route to a scenic mountain region in the eastern Canadian province. The driver failed to negotiate a downhill, left-hand curve on the Trans-Canada Highway, about 70 kilometers west of the town of Golden, and it hit a concrete barrier, flipping over on to its side, said Royal Canadian Mounted Patrol Cpl. John Gillen.

Two other women were also wounded and were transported to hospital in Golden. Their injures were not life-threatening, said Gillen.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities said the road was dry at the time of the crash. The bus was towed to Golden where it will be inspected to determine whether a mechanical failure played a role in the accident.

It was too early to determine whether charges may be filed, Gillen said.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Earlier this week, a Greyhound bus hit black ice in northern Alberta and flipped over, killing three people including an infant.
