A private plane carrying eight Australian engineers to a mine crashed on Thursday, police said, and all on board were feared dead.

Police said the Australian-owned jet crashed in a town called Dowa, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the capital, Lilongwe, the AP says.

"There are no signs of survivors," said police spokesman Willy Mwaluka.

The engineers were on their way to a mine site in Karonga, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Lilongwe where an Australian mining company, Paladin, is establishing a mine.

No further details were immediately available.
