Moderate earthquake in Central Mexico causes no damages

A moderate, 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook Central Mexico Tuesday, frightening tourists but causing no reports of injuries or serious damage.

The quake was centered 59 kilometers (37 miles) north of the resort of Acapulco, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It caused a minor gas leak that was quickly controlled, and knocked out electricity in some areas.

The quake also scared hundreds of tourists, who fled Acapulco's high-rise hotels. Many spent the rest of the night sleeping by the pool, afraid to return to their rooms.

Sandra Santana said she woke up to rattling windows on the 17th floor of her hotel.

"Everything was vibrating, and we thought it was going to fall, crushing us," she said.
