Florida Power & Light to pay penalty for security violation

Florida Power & Light Company, the principal subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc., will pay out $130,000 in civil penalties for breaching security requirements at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has imposed the penalty as a result of a 2006 investigation when it turned out that six security officers were "willfully inattentive" to duty between 2004 through 2006, sleeping on the job or serving as lookouts so other officers could sleep on duty.

Florida-based power utility got a notification but actually paid little attention to the problem.

FPL Group is going to launch its own investigation and find out whether Florida Power & Light Company will pursue dispute resolution, a decision with a 30-day window.

Meanwhile FPL Group is somehow trying to improve the situation at the Wackenhut plant by hardening management oversight and instituting random phone and in-person checks at the facility.
