Rio de Janeiro: one murder per hour

Decades of right-wing rule in Brazil have seen the rich grow richer. 95% of Brazil is still owned by 5% of the population and the basic social ills have yet to be tackled.

In the month of March, every hour, one person was violently murdered in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There were 831 deaths, 17% up on February, an exact figure of 1 violent death every 53.7 minutes.

A further 362 people were the victims of attempted murder and another 397 disappeared, providing a nightmare scenario of an average of one victim of serious aggression every 28 minutes.

The new coordinator for Public Security in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Jaqueline Muniz, declared that she is going to adopt a policy of transparency. “The clarifying will allow police actions to follow up violence”, she added.
