Three Russian Women Charged with Prostitution for No Reason in Egypt

Egyptian prosecutors have finally dropped prostitution charges against three female tourists from Russia’s St. Petersburg. The women had to spend nearly two months in an Egyptian jail.

The sunny country of pyramids turned out to be extremely inhospitable for Natalia Rudenko, Tatiana Trechekas and Yulia Balakina. They were put under arrest in the beginning of August, but their sufferings are about to end now, Fontanka.ru website said with reference to Russia’s Consulate Office in Cairo.

An Egyptian court acquitted the women in the beginning of September, but prosecutors filed a cassational appeal. The rehearing was supposed to take place on October 10, but it took place ahead of the scheduled time. As a result, the court acquitted the three Russians again.

The Egyptian police arrested the three Russian women in Cairo in the middle of August. It was said that an Egyptian man reported them to the police after the women supposedly refused to become acquainted with him. The man said that the women arrived in Egypt to work as prostitutes, and the women were arrested.

The women could send several messages to Russia. They wrote that they were kept in jail and were hardly given any food. Natalia Rudenko, 25, wrote: “We sleep on the tiled floor and eat some crap food. Someone set us up. They took all our stuff from the hotel room while we were drinking coffee downstairs and charged us with prostitution.”

Natalia’s relatives said that they had addressed to the Office of the Russian Foreign Ministry in St. Petersburg and to the Russian Consulate Office in Cairo, but officials did not even listen to them at first.

The date of the deportation of the Russian tourists depends on the decision of Egyptian law-enforcement agencies.
