EU Peacemakers to Oust Russian Military from Transdniester

EU is especially anxious about conflicts near its prospective borders
The European Union is to consider Union the deployment of a peacemaking contingent to Moldavia with the airm to settle the  Transdniester conflict. After a meeting of ambassadors of the EU and NATO members, representatives of the European Union reported that no final decision had been taken as of yet. They say that interests of the Russian side will be taken into consideration while making any decision. According to the plans of European politicians, Russia will lose its dominating peacemaking role in the region.

Observers say that in the framework of its expansion eastwards, the European Union is especially anxious about such conflicts near its prospective borders.

In the early 1990s after the breakup of the USSR, Transdniester where the Russian-speaking population prevails was separated from independent Moldova. An armed conflict broke out in the republic that claimed lives of over 2,000 people. On the initiative of Russia the parties agreed on an armistice, however relations are still very tense between them. A contingent of Russian peacekeepers in Transdniester is still very strong.

Recently the OSCE appealed to the European Union and asked to consider sending of a peacemaking contingent to Moldavia in 2004. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe thinks that peacekeepers are important to support the process of political regulation; helping to create a united federal republic of Moldavia and Transdniester. The European Union is holding consultations on the problem. According to the BBC, for the time being only meetings with NATO representatives have been held, and European politicians say that negotiations are to be held with Russia as well.

Russia's Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports that according to the plans of European politicians, Russia will lose its dominating peacemaking role in the region.
