U.S. sponsored opposition to convene "Friends of Syria" meeting

U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, on Monday (25th) called upon the so-called coalition of "Syrian opposition" to participate in a meeting of the self-styled "Friends of the Syria," scheduled for this Thursday (28th) in Rome. The coalition announced they would not attend the meeting.

The group that calls themselves "Friends of Syria" (or "Friends of the Syrian People") brings together more than a hundred Western and Arab countries, international organizations and representatives of the opposition, seen as posturing by many analysts as unproductive and intrusive by interfering in the conflict in favor of one party against the Syrian government.

"I call on the Syrian opposition to join us for practical reasons, to inform us," said John Kerry, during a press conference with British Foreign Minister William Hague. "This is the right time to see what we can do," he added.

"I want our friends to know that the Syrian opposition is not going to Rome just to talk. Come to Rome to make a decision on the next steps, even though I emphasize that the United States continues to try to seek a political solution," said the Secretary of State, although the military options against the government of President Bashar al-Assad have always been emphasized.

Kerry said the U.S. president, Barack Obama, is "concerned with the question" and sent him to Rome to reflect on the measures that should be taken.

However, the Secretary of State emphasized that the missiles that have left 29 dead and dozens wounded on Friday (22nd) in Aleppo are "more proof that Assad should leave power."

That statement remains unproductive and conrtitutes interference in the internal political affairs of Syria by the U.S..

The statements and activities of the group "Friends of Syria" have caused reactions that reject foreign interference and recall the need for an internal dialogue between the parties in the civil war, without the extreme measures (such as sanctions against the government or military intervention) by the West.

Moreover, the Syrian government has reiterated its proposals for dialogue and reforms, while anti-interventionists reject the attempts of U.S. imperialism and its European Union allies in the Arab world.
