Assad speech

After five months, the Syrian president goes again publicly to the population, in a speech to a large and enthusiastic audience with the words of their representative.

The president arrived to the applause of hundreds of people who shouted "Our soul and our blood, we sacrifice for you!" He assured that if there is a transition, it should be done "in accordance with the terms the Constitution," in reference to elections.  He emphasized that everything to be done is only in the interests and the will of the Syrian people for their own homeland.

Bashar al-Assad suggested a national reconciliation effort, with a new constitution and a new government. "Syria is now living through an unprecedented attack and the solution to this conflict only be through popular participation," Assad reiterated.

During the speech, Assad spoke again of the commitment of friendly nations to build a political solution to the conflict in the country, but warns that we must continue to fight terrorism against the state and fight those who try to divide Syria. "There is no talking with puppets made by the West" he fired.  Dialogue can only be held in consideration of the will and well being of the Syrian people, as he continued:

"As for the west, the descendant of colonialism and owner of the first seal in the policy of division and despicable sectarian strife, it is the one who closed the door of dialogue not us, because it's used to giving orders to the submissive, and we're used to sovereignty, independence and freedom of decision, because it's addicted to hirelings and the subjugated and because we're raised on dignity and pride, and so shall we remain. So, how can it hold dialogue with us, and why would it hold dialogue with is? Therefore, those who talk about the political solution only and ignore these facts are either ignorant of the facts or are weak. They deliver their country and the people of the country as a tender morsel to criminals and those who stand behind them, selling their people and the blood of their martyrs for free, which we will not allow."

As was signaled, the president presented a five-point plan, which envisages a ceasefire and the presence of international observers to monitor the implementation of this initiative. The project also provides for the convening of a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution and the formation of a national unity government and elections to form a new parliament.

The Syrian president last spoke in public on June 3, when he addressed the parliament in Damascus. In November, he gave an interview to a television network in Russia which rejected the idea of exile, saying he would live and die in Syria.

According to Assad, one of the proposals would be to seek the suspension of funding and arms supplies from different Arab countries and the West, entering Syria in droves to "decapitate and dismember the citizens."

Furthermore, he highlighted the creation of a mechanism to ensure the security of the border, which is part of the third stage where talks would begin with all stakeholders in Syrian society, political parties  and social movements, among others, who want to find a solution to the restoration of the nation.

Steps for political solution

The president also said that after the peaceful settlement, the Syrian people will form an expanded government representing all sectors, which are responsible for the presentation of the new constitution to a referendum.

Once approved, parliamentary elections will result in a new government that would be formed based on the new Constitution. Once achieved, a reconciliation conference will take place, and an amnesty will be declared for the release of prisoners.

He explained that any transition in Syria, has run through constitutional means.

Imperialist reaction

In response, the European Union reiterated that intentions are not enough, and that Bashar al-Assad must relinquish power so a transition can be possible.

The Syrian opposition rejected Assad's proposals. The spokesman of the National Syrian coalition says Assad just used empty efforts of the international community towards a solution to the conflict.

Assad's speech received the ususal pig headed responses in the west that are basically not even worth repeating.
