Palestinians present complaint to the UN against Israel for violating truce

The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) complained to the Security Council of the UN (United Nations) to denounce the violation by Israel of the truce that took effect in Gaza on Wednesday after eight days of an Israeli military assault.

The PLO complaint on Saturday (24/11, in a statement, denounces the killing of a 20 year old on the border in an attack which also wounded 25 other Palestinians. The youth participated in a protest near the electronic fence that separates Israel from the territories and Gaza, according to several witnesses.  He was shot by Israeli soldiers when he tried hang a Palestinian flag on the fence.

An Israeli military spokesman claimed that the victim was part of a group of some 300 Palestinians who tried to take down the fence at various points of the southern range, which was reached after ignoring warning shots to stand clear.

The Hamas government denounced the events in Egypt, guarantor of the truce agreement, but cannot officially do it before the UN since they are not a member of the international organization. As the Palestinians have observer status at the UN with the PLO, its ambassador, Riad Mansour, lodged the complaint.

The climate of permanent tension in the Middle East worries the Brazilian government, which considers it essential to discuss the issue at the United Nations with respect to the position of the Arab League. In recent days, the foreign minister, Antonio Patriota, spoke with the secretary general of the Arab League, Nabil Al Arabi, for information and to place himself at Patriota's  disposal.  He reiterated concern about the violence in the region, and advocated dialogue and the creation of the State of Palestine as ways to resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, the emissary from Brazil to the Middle East plus Turkey and Iran, Ambassador Cesario Melantonio Neto, said that he maintains frequent conversations with the Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, and with the Brazilian ambassadors in region. Brazilian Ambassador Brahimi, and will meet next week in New York to talk about the topic.

"The concern is perennial. Brazil's government believes the background theme, involving tension in the Middle East bring focused on the Palestinian issue. For us, the defense of a state of Palestine is part of the moral and ethics of Brazil, as in 1948, when the State of Israel was created at the UN session that was chaired by Brazilian Oswaldo Aranha.  The question was very well placed for us at the time," said Neto Melantonio.

Melantonio Neto also noted that the Brazilian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is on alert to help Brazilians who live in areas considered under threat. According to him, if a citizen asks the government for help, they will receive it. "It is the obligation of government to give support," he said.

However, the ambassador recalled that, in most cases, the Brazilians that are in the Middle East maintain emotional or business ties and, therefore, are reluctant to leave the places where they live, even when there is a climate of tension. "We respect that, but we remain on alert in case they need our support," said Neto Melantonio.
