WSJ: ISIS poses no threat to US

The Wall Street Journal wrote that ISIS posed no serious threat to the US and could be annihilated by the Western coalition in some days. Mark Helprin believes that Washington should be afraid of Iran, which develops nuclear weapon, unites Shia states around itself and cooperates with Russia. According to the journalist, under air support of the US coalition, the Turkish army which is currently in the north, can join expeditionary forces of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt in the south in order to divide then Syria into two parts. And due to the Kurdish and Iraqi forces in the east the IS will at once find itself being surrounded, while the territory Bashar al-Assad controls will be reduced to a small enclave under the aegis of its 'Russian patrons'. However, Helprin believes that the main aim is not the IS defeat. The major threat to the US is Iran. Unless its plans are hampered, Teheran - which will soon have its own nuclear weapon - may unite in a political-military-religious alliance with Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. It will have at its disposal huge oil riches of Iran and Iraq, ports in the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf and in the Indian Ocean. Beside that, this Shia alliance may carry out detrimental military cooperation with Russia. Helprin is sure that Saudi Arabia will follow Iran. It will embolden the Shia population of the Gulf states. Egypt will have to choose appeasement or standing with its Sunni co-religionists.
