Russia and China to exploit Arctic

The Russian and Chinese researchers will create a scientific research centre on industrial exploitation of the Arctic. The Far Eastern Federal University and the Harbin Institute of Technology signed an agreement on creation of a single scientific research centre, which will deal with industrial exploitation of the Arctic.

The Russian and Chinese researchers will carry out joint developments of ice-breaking platforms as well as study longevity of various types of concrete within the polar circle. Beside that the Harbin and Far Eastern universities adopted a program on students exchange.

Before that, Andrey Belov, deputy dean of the Saint Petersburg State University Faculty of Economics, claimed that there's a possibility to achieve a breakthrough on the basis of economic exploitation of the Arctic. He noted that 'the Arctic idea' might become a driving force of the new industrialization of the country, as it was with the space exploitation and 'a nuclear project'. However, Russia should get down to exploitation of the Arctic in time, before its competitors: the US, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and China.
