Bloomberg unmasks Ukrainian elite

Being left without war cover, the Ukrainian elite has quickly shown its true face. As Bloomberg wrote, instead of being hope of democracy after the 'dignity revolution', Ukraine turned into yet another incompetent and corrupt post-Soviet regime. According to analyst Leonid Bershidsky, it's no surprise that cracks in relations between Kiev and the West occur.

Populists dominate in legislative branch and it seriously hampers conduct of important reforms, in case anyone was going to carry them out at all. Ukraine's economy hasn't been reformed. Taxes are still very high, and many are still trying to get round it, volumes of shadow economy are still growing, while regulatory climate hasn't changed, the expert believes.

No reforms have been made in judicial system either. As Christof Heyns, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, claimed, the Ukrainian authorities failed to carry out investigations concerning death of over 100 people in Kiev during the last days of revolution, as well as murder of 48 pro-Russian activists at the burnt down Trade Union House in Odessa in May 2014.

Attempts of the US and Europe to govern Ukraine also turned out to be mostly unsuccessful: power of oligarchs appeared too strong, while their schemes - too deep-rooted, the analyst concluded.
