Netherlands faces ‘great flood’
The Netherlands is subsiding slowly but steadily. Flooding is inevitable in the nearest one hundred years. Such a conclusion was reached by fellows of the European Space Agency. Having analyzed all data obtained from satellites, the researchers found out that the ground subsides about 1 millimetre a year. However, in some regions subsidence is going more quickly, up to 20 millimetres a year. It refers to the areas, which are situated to the west of Lake IJsselmeer, and to the east of Groningen city. According to the researchers, it may be connected with salt extraction in these regions. It is also noted in the Space Agency report that land deformation will soon affect underground utilities and urgent measures should be taken immediately.
