Food destruction: Russian summer fun

In early August, the Russians have found a new summer entertainment for themselves. They can watch European cheeses and meat being bulldozed into the dirt. Russia started destroying the food that had been imported into the country despite the food embargo on August 6. During the first day of this activity, over 300,000 tons of foreign food was destroyed. Fruit will come next - nectarines, peaches and cherries were brought to Russia from Belarus, but were grown in Turkey.

The Russian authorities believe that the destruction of sanctioned products is a form of the struggle against those who do not obey the Russian laws. Yet, many Russians have reacted negatively to this initiative of the authorities. Some people tried to collect signatures against the destruction of food. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the food was being destroyed to take care of the health of Russian citizens and protect economic interests of the country. According to Peskov, this may not look very nice, but it goes about nothing but smuggling - the cargo that has been delivered to the territory of Russia illegally and without any certificates. For this reason, the official added, it was decided not to hand out the food to the people in need.
