USA provoking conflict with China

It has recently transpired that the US intends to send its warships and aircraft to the area of the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. This area is very important for the USA from the point of view of control of free navigation. In November last year, Pentagon spokesman Jeffrey Pool said that China was going to build a military airfield in the region. Are the relations between the two nuclear powers going to escalate?

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Center for Public Policy Research

"The escalation started there after the United States conducted joint military exercises with the Philippines in the region. China responded and started sending  warships with aircraft to the Spratly archipelago. Afterwards, the United States requested assistance from Japan. Japan agreed to start joint patrols in cooperation with the United States. The story is about the balance of forces. What is worse is that three other countries - Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia also decided to send their warships to the region.

Does the USA have any spare warships to send to that region? The Americans would rather not send warships to the Black Sea, they would not hold drills in northern seas, they'd rather not send ships to the Baltic region. The US can not strengthen its naval presence both in the east and in the west. The Americans will have to make a choice. If they can send warships to the region of the South China Sea, then it can be a matter of short presence only. Otherwise they will have to think where to take warships from."
