Barcelona FC has announced that manager Tito Vilanova is to step down to concentrate on his cancer treatment. The Argentinean coach Gerardo Martino steps in to Nou Camp on a contract said to be worth two years. Martino was formerly Paraguay manager. Other news: Rooney for Chelsea? Gerardo Martino: Born in Rosário, Argentina, in 1962. 505 caps with Newell's Old Boys, one Argentina cap; as manager he started to appear in Paraguay with Libertad and Cerro Porteno, manager of the Paraguay national team in 2006, world cup last 8, runners-up to Uruguay in 2011 Copa América. After Helenio Herrera, Roque Olsen and Cesar Luis Menotti, Vilanova is the fourth Argentinean coach of Barcelona.

From Russia the hot news is that Guus Hiddink has resigned as coach of Anzhi Makhachkala, a club which was fast off the starting-blocks to hire former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen as their main first-team coach. Meulensteen was Hiddinck's number two after leaving United when Sir Alex Ferguson moved upstairs, leaving former Everton boss David Moyes as first team coach.
