The United States of America leads the medals table at the end of Day Two of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Russia’s single bronze makes the medals table, the first national hero being Ivan Skobrev, who stood in third place on the podium after the 5,000 metre speed skating on Saturday. Here are all the results so far.
The first medals of the tournament came early on Saturday, from the Ski Jumping Individual finals. Switzerland’s Simon Ammann got the first Gold medal, the Silver going to Poland’s Adam Malysz and the Bronze to Gregor Schlierenzauer (Austria). Russia’s Denis Kornilov finished in 26th place and Pavel Karelin, in 33rd.
Russia’s medal came an hour later, at midday, in the Men’s 5,000 metre speed skating, in which the Netherlands’ Sven Kramer won Gold. Silver went to Seung-Hoon Lee (Republic of Korea) and Bronze, to Russia’s Ivan Skobrev, who declared he was satisfied with his performance and hopes to compete for two more medals in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Alexander Rumyantsev was disqualified.
The first women’s medals came an hour later, in the Women’s Biathlon 7.5 km sprint. Gold went to Slovakia (Anastazia Kusmina), Silver to Germany (Magdalena Neuner) and France’s Marie Dorin got the Bronze. Russia’s Anna Boulygina just missed out, finishing less than a second behind Dorin. Olga Zaitseva came in seventh, Svetlana Slepstova was 13th and Olga Medvedtseva was 22nd.
At the end of the day came 4 medals for the United States of America. In the Men’s Short Track 1,500 metre finals Apolo Anton Ohno came in second and J.R. Celski third, behind the Republic of Korea’s Jung-Su Lee (Gold medal). The last Gold of the day went to the US ladies in Freestyle Skiing (Moguls), in which Hannah Kearney won Gold, Canada’s Jennifer Heil got Silver and Shannon Bahrke (USA), the Bronze.
On Sunday (at the time we closed) the first medals of the day went to Vincent Jay, France (Gold), Emil Hegle Svendsen, Norway (Silver) and Jakov Fak, Croatia (Bronze) in the Men’s Biathlon 10 km Sprint.
